    The state started keeping Death Certificates in 1912. The Mississippi Department of Archives in Jackson, Ms. has the Death Certificates from 1912 to 1943. The death Certificates have changed over the years, some years it asked for husband/wifes name, others did not. It always asked for mother and fathers name and place of birth. The family information on the death certificate was given by an informant, usally a family member. The medical information was given by a Doctor who signed the certificate. Death Date should be correct. I have found when death date on headstone does not agree with certificate. Birth and Parent information are not always correct, depends on what the informant knew.

    EXAMPLE OF THIS: Clemmie Cathrine Seitz and James W. Thompson were brother and sister, children of W.W. Thompson and Mary per 1850 Census. But Clemmie's certificate has mother as Polly Ann Hopkins, James W. certificate has mother as Polly Copeland. Polly is often used as nickname for Mary, so was William W. married twice or is one/both of the names on the certificate wrong? When asked to do a look up, I record the others from Oktibbeha on the same microfish. On the microfish the certificates are grouped by County/Year & Month. There are indexes, which are grouped by surnames, years.
